Preventing Motorcycle Crashes
As much fun as motorcycles are to ride, there is an element of danger involved. Motorcycle crashes do occur, and while some are caused by reckless riding practices, plenty of others happen through no fault of the motorcyclists themselves. Whether you’re faced with compromised car drivers, animals leaping into your path, inclement weather conditions, or potholes, you’ll want to do everything you can to keep control of your motorcycle and prevent an accident.
Here at Cycle World, our customers’ safety on the road is our top priority. We want to ensure you have the knowledge to keep yourself protected while riding your bike, so we’ve created this guide to help prevent motorcycle crashes.
Remain Visible
When you’re on your bike on city streets or highways, you’re surrounded by much larger vehicles. The drivers of these vehicles may be distracted and are not focused. Keeping yourself highly visible can draw their gaze to you and prevent them from running into you. Your black motorcycle outfit may look awesome, but it doesn’t make you stand out, particularly at night. You’ll want to wear brightly-colored and reflective clothing, or put on reflective tape over your black ensemble to make yourself more visible.
Stay Sharp
Sometimes crashes are caused by a mistake on the motorcyclist’s part. Prevent this by brushing yourself on safe riding tips and techniques by taking an advanced bike riding course. You might have forgotten some of the tricks you learned previously and this will help you hone your skills, so you can successfully navigate traffic without incidents.
Make Sure You Can See
If your own visibility suffers, then you’re going to put yourself at increased risk of getting in an accident. You should be able to see the traffic around you and any obstacles ahead on the road to stay safe.
Your motorcycle’s lights may not be bright enough to effectively illuminate the road at night, so installing brighter LED lights can instantly improve your visibility. If your motorcycle has a windshield, you’ll want to ensure it’s installed at a height that doesn’t cut through your line of vision and it should be clear of mud, debris, and water.
When wearing a helmet, make sure your face shield or goggles come with anti-fogging abilities, so that you aren’t blinded by condensation on your lenses. Rain can also make it hard to see, which is why it’s best to avoid riding when your visibility is severely compromised.
These are some safety measures you can take to prevent a motorcycle crash. If you’re planning to buy a motorcycle, visit Cycle World in Virginia Beach, VA, to see what we have in stock. We proudly serve all those in Chesapeake and Norfolk.
